Gnaouas of Morocco

1998

50 minutes

Serge Bergli

Polygone Onze

The Gnaouas are the descendants of black slaves deported to Maghrib. Their music is originated in the trance ceremonies which are adapted in order to survive in the Islam world. In some areas these practices have a tinge of strange musical syncretism of Judaism. The first recordings of Gnawa music were made in 1975 and they’ve inspired pop musicians like Jimmy Page, or Jazz like Randy Weston who regularly calls on these bands to participate in his concerts.
